The 1st Modern Porsche 911

The Porsche 911 SC and the Porsche 911 3.2 were the first true modern 911s. They deliver a pure link to the previous generation of Porsches dating back to the Porsche 901 shown in 1964. Starting in the late 70’s Porsche introduced a new Porsche 911 known as the Porsche 911SC. It was a great success and carried the Porsche 911 nameplate to greater heights.

These cars were the ‘air-cooled’ Porsche 911 cars and the fanatical Porsche owners loved them. What is an ‘air-cooled’ 911? These engines are cooled by the air and the circulating oil within the engine. This produced a unique sound and mystic feel to the car unlike anything else on the market. Later on in the late 90’s with the Porsche 996 range, they went to the modern water-cooled engine configuration (which all cars use today). The engine was 3.0 liters and produced 180-hp to 204-hp. They were also known to be bullet-proof and made very well. In later years a cabriolet version was built to be sold with the original coupe version.

For 1984 Porsche came with a replacement for the Porsche 911SC and it was called the Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2. This was Porsche reviving the Carrera name for the first time since 1977.

A newer, higher displaced motor was utilized, a 3.2 litre horizontally opposed flat 6-cylinder. Hence how the car was named with the 3.2. These cars had increased power to 231 hp and were very fast. Porsche also started to release different model version of the 911 and offered convertibles, targa tops, and turbo-body looks to customers as options. These cars were seen as the true essence of the 1980’s Porsche 911. They had very few electronics and felt very raw by today’s standards. The last 2 years of the Porsche 911 3.2 run came with a popular G50 transmission. These particular model years (1987-1988) obtain higher price values due to this transmission alone.

As a whole, the whole range of the air-cooled Porsche 911 is now hot on the used-car market. Because of the global economy and the rich getting richer, more and more collectors are looking for solid, unmolested Porsche 911 SC and Porsche 911 3.2 to buy and add to their collections. While they were once popular to own and drive with the Porsche 911 enthusiast crowd, to buy one now on the market will take some patience and more money then usual. Collectors, speculators and greedy men have made the pricing of these models higher and ultimately tougher for enthusiasts to purchase.
