Porsche Unleashes the 8th Generation of the Porsche 911 to the World

In 2020 Porsche launched their latest version of the Porsche 911 Carrera, code named the Porsche 992. As per the previous generations the Porsche 992 is not revoutionary but evolutionary in design. It is easily recognizable as teh Porsche 911. But to fit the modern world Porsche equipped the Porsche 992 with its latest learnings and technologies.

One of the first traits you will see is the wider fender treatment on the car. Previously only all-wheel drive 911s and GT versions received the wider fender treatment but now Porsche says all 992 cars will come with the wider track as default. It is to be seen if the body does get wider with the Turbo and GT models that comes later in the production cycle of a new 911 platform.

Outside you’ll notice some new features including door handles that site flush with the body, a squared off front hood, and a body-length rear light bar which is now standard on all 911s (not just the C4S models).

Other differences include new LED front headlights treatment and a larger rear spoiler (its wider then before). The spoiler also pops-up in two settings. Most controversy is the blacked out difussuer that houses the exhaust tips. Its part of the new design language of the current Porsche line-up and it will take time to see if it ages well with the overall design of the new 911.

More Power Please

Like every previous 911, the 992 has a flat-six mounted engine in the rear, behind the rear wheels. In this current iteration the Porsche 911 S comes with a twin-turbo 3.0 liter that was used in the previous 991.2 models but thanks to revisions to the turbo and fuel-injection systems makes alot more power. How much? How about 443hp in the Carrear S models.

This with the PDK transmission will help the Carrera S goe to 0-60 in 3.3 seconds and 3.2 seconds for the Carrear 4S model. Top speed is 190 for the Carrera S.

Other ways the Porsche 992 stands out from its precessor is new ABS and stability controls in a optional ‘Wet Driving’ mode. This helps the car manage the road in wet conditions espeically if you only have the rear-wheel drive model in the Carrera S. Also optional is a nigh-vision camera.

Interior

The 911 interior will be familiar to drivers of other current Porsche vehicles like the Panamera. The seats are comfortable and fitting, fit and finish is top notch especially in ‘extended leather’ options.

The main feature is the large 10.9-inch touchscreen center display that controls your infotainment settings. Two giant screens flank the central-mounted tachometer in front of the driver as well, and they all work seamlessly together with the central display.

The center stack houses all your controls but thankfully the center buttons are actual toggles instead of being pure touch buttons as in the other Porsche sedans and SUVs. Two other surprises include a new PDK shifter – which looks half-way designed compared to the previous generation and for the first time a cup holder in the center console (it only took the Germans 50 years to understand the value of having a cup holder in the center console compared to the over-engineered pop-out cup holders found in the 997 and 991 models).

2020 Launch

For the initial year Porsche is only offering two models for 2020. The Carrera S and Carrera C4S will be the only models for sale. You can expect to pony up $114,250 for a Carrera S or $121,650 for a Carrera 4S in the USA.

Except the steady stream of other 911 variants to come out in the upcoming years including a base Carrera and the GT models. A Turbo will come the following year followed by a possible plug-in hybrid version.
